Arizona: Megadrought worst on record. “This current megadrought began in the mid-1990s…” said Dr. Kevin Murphy, researcher of Hydro-climatology at Arizona State University. Megadroughts can run 10 to 30 years. He looked at tree ring records and found our current one. “This has been the most severe megadrought over 1,000 years; that’s what we found by looking at the records,” said Dr. Murphy.
Canada: Ottawa sets record for hottest July in nearly 100 years. The city sweltered under intense heatwaves for over half of the month by Canada standards. The city endured 18 days above 30 °C (86 °F), including three days that smashed records, and six nights where the mercury did not fall below 20 °C (68 °F). Climatologist David Phillips said August is usually a degree cooler than July, on average, and no heat records are expected this month. However, August will still feel much like July. It’s going to be the same pattern, a summer of summers.

Japan: Series of powerful eruptions at Nishinoshima volcano occurred over the past couple of days. The Tokyo VAAC warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to 4,900 m (1,600 feet) altitude. Volcanic activity surged in June, with recurring explosions and lava flow ever since.

India: Continued escalation of Christian persecution, including killings. The Persecution Relief report states, “Hate crimes against Christians in India have risen by an alarming 40.87% despite a nationwide lockdown since March 25.” 293 cases of persecution were reported in the first six months of 2020. This included five religious-motivated rapes and six religiously-motivated murders. “In most cases, the attackers are right-wing Hindus who want to turn India into a Hindu-only nation.” Between January 2016 and June 2020, there were 2,067 crimes inspired by religious intolerance against Christians in India.
Africa: 14 Baptist church members killed by Fulani Muslims in Nigeria. Residents have since fled the area as farming communities continue to be targeted. Genocide has claimed the lives of over 1,400 Christians in Nigeria this year alone by Muslim groups, and over 1,000 kidnapped. North Korea: Deadly gas explosion reported near China border. As many as 15 people died and dozens were injured. The cause was likely a gas explosion that took place in a multi-family residential building. Fires that spread had to be put out by locals as no fire engines arrived. When officials arrived, they were only concerned as to whether any households had rescued portraits of the Kim leaders.
Lebanon Protests as Lebanon arrests 16 over deadly Beirut blast. The explosion was caused by ammonium nitrate (widely used for fertilizer) stored for several years. Officials said the death toll from the explosion that killed at least 157 people and injured 5,000 others was expected to rise as search-and-rescue operations continued for missing people. Tens of thousands signed a petition calling for Lebanon to be placed under French mandate. “Lebanon’s officials have clearly shown a total inability to secure and manage the country,” the petition reads. “With a failing system, corruption, terrorism and militia the country has just reached its last breath.” “We believe Lebanon should go back under the French mandate in order to establish a clean and durable governance.” However, other citizens denounced the petition as a means to continue French colonialism.
French president Emmanuel Macron’s moment amid cheering crowds in devastated Beirut. He allowed himself to be thronged by residents of one of the worst-hit neighborhoods. Dozens chanted “revolution” and pleaded with him for help. Long-simmering anger against Lebanon’s leaders has flared since the blast. Some welcomed Macron like a savior. “Help us, you are our only hope,” one shouted. He promised to pitch a “new political deal” to the country’s leaders, and to press them to deliver sweeping change.
Hezbollah looted Lebanon and it will cost $93b. to bail it out. The new report presents a sobering picture of the challenges facing Lebanon. These are difficulties tied directly to the role of Hezbollah in looting the country and hijacking it. If a bailout doesn’t take into account extracting concessions from Hezbollah or the role it plays in the country, this “risks transferring billions to a global terrorist organization and perpetuating one of the largest Ponzi schemes in history.”
Israel versus Hezbollah: The terrorist leader Hassan Nasrallah threatened in the past to destroy Israel by causing a massive explosion in the port of Haifa using ammonia tanks that he said would be like a “nuclear” explosion. In addition, Hezbollah allegedly sought to acquire ammonium nitrate via Syria since 2009 and tried to infiltrate the agriculture ministry in Lebanon to do so. The archival footage has been circulating in the wake of the massive explosion in Lebanon that killed over 100, injured 4,000, and has left hundreds missing. It illustrates Hezbollah’s terrorist strategy of targeting civilians for mass murder, despite the organization’s claim that it is “resisting” Israel by defending Lebanon.
Israel estimates that the likelihood that Hezbollah will carry out its threats to harm Israel has dropped significantly following the explosion in Lebanon. It is estimated that Hezbollah’s efforts will be directed at internal affairs, and the risk of a confrontation with Israel is considered too high after the disaster.
