Women who have struggled with guilt and even some long-term health problems from the procedure might also take a different view.

Scientists in China are considering how best to look after three children (now toddlers) who were gene-edited as embryos in He Jiankui’s controversial experiment. Their genomes were edited using CRISPR technology in an effort to prevent them from contracting HIV from their fathers. After a cell’s DNA has been cut by CRISPR, its molecular infrastructure puts the two ends back together. But this is often imperfect, either adding or removing some DNA letters. Also, the edit in the target gene could also affect the genes around it. Whole pieces of chromosomes could be deleted, which could lead to all sorts of developmental issues. In other news, the god players claim they’ve developed a ‘softer’ form of CRISPR that may edit genes more accurately.

Monkeypox cases have tripled in Europe in the past two weeks. Over 450 cases have been diagnosed in the U.S., which does not typically see the disease. The WHO calls for urgent action.
Monkeypox symptoms in UK patients differ from previous outbreaks: Lancet study. Researchers looked at 54 homosexual patients at sexual health clinics in London, UK. This group had a higher prevalence of skin lesions in the genital and anal area. The high prevalence of genital skin lesions and high rate of co-occurring sexually transmitted infections means sexual health clinics are likely to see additional monkeypox cases in the future. Currently, the UK and several other countries are seeing a rapid increase in monkeypox among those attending sexual health clinics, with no apparent links to countries where the disease is endemic. As many as 90% who responded to questions reported at least one new sexual partner during the three weeks prior to symptoms. Over half had over five sexual partners in the 12 weeks prior to their monkeypox diagnosis.
