David, like all of us, made mistakes. At times, he failed miserably. In one instance, David’s failure cost the life of 70,000 men (2 Sam 24). However, every time David came to understand his transgressions, he was quick to repent and take the necessary actions to appease God. Cain, on the other hand, was not of this nature. In fact, when he slew his innocent brother Abel and was subsequently confronted by God about his actions, he failed to repent. Incredibly, instead of owning his actions, he chose to expend his energies by blaming God for a punishment too harsh (Gen 3). Likewise, America was once great because, like David, the people were quick to repent. However, the nation’s inhabitants, having become hardhearted, now choose to blame God for the righteous judgments He metes out.
Therefore, this statement is true, “America: Once like David – Now like Cain.”
David is the king whereby all others are measured. Likewise, America is the nation to which all others have been compared during the last couple of centuries. Unfortunately, it appears that America will not retain the same testimony that the Bible has in regard to David. No indeed, David finished well. America, on the other hand, seems to be on a very destructive path, one which will lead to a terrible end. This is quite simply because America has chosen to reject God and His commandments.
America now acts like Cain, who withdrew from God and was never heard of again. Oh, he went his way, and an entire line of people called Cain their father. However, he was never again spoken of in the Bible as one who talked or walked with God. The title speaks of America now being like Cain. Surely, there is no worse condition than to be without God. Incredibly, America has chosen to exist as a Godless nation because, like Cain, God’s correction is rejected and repentance is shunned.
We must not fail to recognize one additional condition attributed to the lineage of Cain; none of his offspring survived the flood of Noah. Therefore, Cain’s rejection of God led to his utter extinction. This is where those in America who are without Christ are headed. Soon, like Noah, the church will be lifted up to a place of protection while great cataclysm scourges the earth and its inhabitants.
While not the primary entity spoken of here, the church is not altogether innocent, for many so-called ministers have fallen prey to the wiles of the devil and are turning from the truth of God’s Word toward humanism. These false ministers have inundated the church to the point that many now desire what man wants over what God has set forth in His Word. This means men are more apt to blame God when He metes out righteous judgment than to repent. With this in mind, we will examine some of the primary reasons for the decline of this once great nation and how the church, so-called, has contributed.
Savorless Salt
A portion of salt is supposed to season the whole of something. This is what Christians are supposed to be. God chose to scatter believers abroad so they could be those who display virtuous behavior, which holds putrification at bay. For a long time, this worked in America. The nation was blessed because of the scattered salt. Incredibly, something that seemed to be good turned the tide, and the salt began to lose its savor. What was this tide-turning event? The advent of the mega-church.
At first, these churches seemed to be a very good thing. However, once people began to flock to these large congregations, many smaller churches closed due to lack of attendees. This resulted in the salt clustering together and the scattered effect being lost. One could argue that this is not a problem because those who attend mega-churches still live abroad, and they are still scattered. While this argument is valid, what happens when the message of the mega-church ministers strays from the truth of Scripture and begins to teach false doctrine? You guessed it; the gathered salt begins to lose its savor.
Over time, the largest churches have become experts at drawing large crowds. However, in order to keep them, they have to tickle the ears of all who come. God forbid that someone should be called to repentance and offended while attending church. Because of this, some of the largest churches resemble the world more than the church. In fact, one would be hard-pressed in some churches to discern whether a gathering is a church service or a secular event. Sadly, as the messages become more and more secular, so too does the body of once salty believers.[1] This results in vast regions of the country becoming occupied by formerly salty people who are no longer able to keep decay at bay.
Matthew 5:13
“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men” (Matt 5:13). However, when salt loses its savor, it is good for nothing except to be thrown out and trampled by men.[2]
Wanton Sinfulness
As the salt continues to lose its savor, America becomes more and more like Sodom and Gomorrah, towns that were judged because they had become very sinful. Some would say that judgment is coming because of this. However, it could be argued that judgment is already upon America. In order to understand this, it is important to see what God says about sin and judgment:
Romans 1:18-32
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
“Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts [Judgment], to dishonour their own bodies between themselves [Judgment]: Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
“For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections [Judgment]: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
“And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient [Judgment]; Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.” (emphasis mine) [author’s comments]
Like Sodom and Gomorrah, America is displaying the traits of those who are in the midst of judgment: The overwhelming passion for all things LGBTQ is direct evidence of God’s judgment upon this nation.[3] The fact that so many are confused about what gender they are is also direct evidence of God’s judgment upon this nation. Finally, the fact that every other type of sin is rampant is yet further evidence that God’s judgment is upon this nation (Rom 1:26-32). You see, judgment does not always come in the form of catastrophe. However, like Sodom and Gomorrah, without repentance, America will end up a nation utterly destroyed.[4] You might ask: how is one to escape such great sin? The answer is quite simple yet profoundly difficult.
Be in the World – But Not of the World
Lot escaped Sodom because he was found righteous even though he was surrounded by rampant sin (2 Peter 2:7). All Christians who are alive and remain are, like Lot, in an environment that can vex the soul. Everywhere you look, sin clamors for attention. Truly this is a time of great confusion as many call good evil and evil good (Is 5:20). Likewise, it is easy to see the current day on display in Paul’s warning to Timothy in 2nd Timothy chapter 3:
2 Timothy 3:1-7
“This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.”
With all of this in mind, the only possible way to survive until Jesus comes to call us up to Him is to be not of the substance of this world:
John 17:14-15
“I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.” (emphasis mine)
Romans 12:1-2
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (emphasis mine)
Thank God, we have something that Lot did not have, the abiding Holy Spirit who lives within (1 Cor 6:19; Rom 8:9). If we will listen to Him, He will lead us into all truths (John 16:13). Without a doubt, the Holy Spirit will bring to our attention those things we should do and the things we need to repent of. The question is: when He shows us our errors, will we be like David and repent, or will we be like Cain and blame God for His just judgment of our misdeeds?
Conclusion
Like King David, America was made great by her love for God. This message is hard to believe when, everywhere you turn, this truth has been blotted out because America has chosen to follow the way of Cain and reject God’s leadership. Nonetheless, God once held a great place in the hearts of American citizens. In fact, until the advent of the false doctrine of evolution, most believed in creationism, which caused Godly fear. However, when man began to believe he evolved over millions of years from a simple ameba, he began to lose the salt we have been speaking of here. All these years later, the salt that remains is fading as those who have great savor pass on to join the great multitude of the dead in Christ who have gone before.
The most unfortunate thing is the church in America has become ineffective in its mission to reach the lost with the gospel. This is true because the vast majority of professing churches no longer preach the gospel. Instead, they are more concerned with having fun, or proclaiming the false prosperity/word of faith gospel, or the false gospel of the kingdom now. Perhaps the most concerning part of this is the American church is now exporting these scripturally bankrupt doctrines to other nations.
***Special Message:
If you are reading this, and you attend a church that is compromising with the world, please consider the following words carefully: You stand in danger of being conformed to this world which is another way of saying you are in danger of losing your saltiness. You must come out from among those who pervert the gospel. No one knows how much longer the Father will delay the Son’s coming to retrieve His bride.[5] Therefore, we must remain salty and vigilant as our only hope is to be found worthy to stand before Christ:
Luke 21:36
“Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.”
