SBC’s Executive Committee rejected a proposal that would have allowed the firm investigating the committee’s handling of sexual abuse claims to review materials involving the executive committee and its attorney. A 2019 report from the Houston Chronicle documented hundreds of abuse cases in Southern Baptist churches over decades.
The report found over 700 victims of alleged sexual abuse by 380 Southern Baptist leaders and volunteers since 1998. 220 have been convicted; 100 are still in prison. Many victims accused Southern Baptist leaders, including past presidents, of concealing the abuse. Some accused of sexual abuse left their congregations and found jobs in other Southern Baptist churches. Many victims were children, as young as 3. Most allegations are not new news to the SBC. Many had been investigated before, but the SBC failed to act, citing church autonomy as a hindrance to any meaningful reforms.

EcoHealth Alliance submitted a grant proposal in 2018 — 18 months before the first COVID cases appeared — describing a plan to release “skin-penetrating nanoparticles and aerosols containing ‘novel chimeric spike proteins’ of bat coronaviruses into cave bats in Yunnan, China.” Researchers also wanted to create chimeric viruses that were “genetically enhanced to infect humans more easily, and requested $14 million from the Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to fund the work. Researchers hoped to introduce “human-specific cleavage sites” to bat coronaviruses, which would make it easier for the virus to enter human cells.
