I have not been able to find a place in Scripture that says that the gifts of the Spirit are not for today. Furthermore, we know that the Holy Spirit was sent to be a comforter and convictor of Christians after Christ’s ascension–that includes us! We are the believers to whom the Holy Spirit was sent to minister. So, how could we logically think that any gift He has to offer would not be for us today?
First Corinthians 12:7-11 says, “Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between Spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All of these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one as he determines.”
From the above verses we learn several things about the gifts of the Spirit: 1. They are intended to be used for the common good–to build up the Body of Christ. 2. Each person has different gifts. 3. The gifts are given to each person by the discretion of the Holy Spirit. 4. Because this book was written to believers after Christ, we can be confident that it was intended for us.
