Many Bible scholars try to argue that a downfall on the scale of the one led by Satan never could happen again. They state that God will forever prevent such a thing from happening. Most fail to provide any details or support for why they feel this will be the case.
As long as risen saints and angels have free will, we have no way of ruling out this possibility. When Lucifer fell, he convinced a large part of the heavenly host to join him in his futile struggle against God. Satan was deceived by his own beauty and pride. The angels who joined him seem to have committed the greatest error. Their rebellion was caused by them blindly following the lead of someone else.
We probably won’t be able to completely answer this question until we get to Heaven. For now, we do have the example of Lucifer’s downfall to persuade people from going down this path.
“How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations! For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God. I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north: I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High. Yet thou shalt be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit” (Isa. 14:12-15).
